James O. "Nick" Nickerson

June 2, 1933 — November 19, 2023

In loving memory of James O. “Nick” Nickerson, born on June 2nd, 1933 in Chesterton, Indiana, and peacefully departed on November 19th, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ogden and Louisa (Runnels) Nickerson, his beloved wife Delores “Bug” Nickerson, and his sister Mary Louise Hake.


He graduated from Portage High School in 1951 and attended Purdue University. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, followed by eight years in the Army Reserves.


For 40 years, Nick was a dedicated member of Teamsters Union Local 142. His professional journey included employment with Mid-America Homes and culminated in his retirement from Bethlehem Steel in 1995.


Nick and Dee spent many summers at their family cabin in Mackinaw City, Michigan and winters in Punta Gorda, Florida at Alligator Park. Nick's community spirit shone, through his role as "Nick the Can Man". He collected cans to support the park's landscaping and enhancements.


Nick is survived by his daughter, Christy King (Lance), and his son, Jim Nickerson (Sue), two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.


In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Portage United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
