David M. Smith

David M. Smith, 80, of Port Charlotte, FL passed away May 15, 2016. He was the son of George and Olive Smith, born July 19, 1935 in Darby, PA. He graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC and St Mary's Seminary College in Baltimore, MD. David served in the US Army during the Korean War and later was a Computer Programmer for the National Science Foundation before retiring in 1998 and moving to Port Charlotte in 2002. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and "captain of his own boat". As a Master Gardener, he cultivated a plot on the National Mall in front of the National Air and Space Museum, and assisted setting up several community gardens in Port Charlotte area. He was active as a Lector at both St. Peter's parish on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC and Sacred Heart parish. He was also active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Sacred Heart Parish. David will be greatly missed by Christine, his wife of 54 years, sons Matthew (Laura), Douglas (Gretchen), Terrence, Bradley (Shelah), and his Grandchildren Columbia, Mira, Rigil, Ashely, Kaitlyn and Kevin. A funeral mass will be held Friday May 20, 2016 at 11AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Punta Gorda. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made payable to St Vincent de Paul Society, and mailed to Sacred Heart Church.
