Timothy Erik Peterson

Tim Peterson, 72, from Punta Gorda, Florida, passed away on March 20, 2024 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, FL. Tim and his wife, Katie, married for 34 years, recently moved from Temperance, Michigan in 2021 to their newly built home in Punta Gorda, Florida.

Tim was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer, in November 2021 and passed due to a compromised immune system and final bout with pneumonia.

Tim was born in Chicago, Illinois, August 1951, the second son of Robert and Virginia Peterson, has an older brother, Rob Peterson and younger sister, Kris McCullough (Robert ‘Bob’ Peterson served as NCYC’s 4th Commodore). Tim attended East Grand Rapids High School, then transferred and graduated from Whitmer High School in Toledo, in 1970. He attended the University of Toledo, then several years later, graduated from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan with a degree in Education and Trade Technical Skills.

Tim grew up primarily in Toledo, moving to White Cloud, Michigan in 1978, returning in 1984. He was employed at SSOE Architects and Engineers for 30 years as a Project Manager, retiring in 2013. As a youth, he grew up as a member of North Cape Yacht Club, Toledo Ice YC sailing, and racing Kate, a Sigma362 for 26 years. While Tim’s passion was sailing, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, construction, wood working, and generally was interested in and knowledgable in so many topics.

Tim is survived by his wife, Katie (Catherine) Peterson, stepson Rob Linden, his wife Meghan and their two sons, Ridge(8) and Everett(5), sister, Kris McCullough, brother, Rob Peterson and wife Joyce, five nieces and nephews, and aunt, Sandra Koester.

Tim was a very smart worker and would never let go of a problem until he solved it. His tenacity was evident even as a young kid. Rob relates the following memory about riding bikes when Tim was about 7 years old. The bikes were 24-inch, 2-wheelers. Rob had a growth spurt and got a 36 incher, which was much faster. The first time they rode together, Rob got way out in front and looked back for his little bro, and there he was way back, bright red, gritting his teeth and huffing and puffing trying to keep up. Tim outgrew Rob to become a strong 6’ 2” member of the North Cape Yacht Club.

Tim was also known for his quirky sense of humor. When he heard that his brother-in-law, Skip, had fallen from a broken ladder while working on his sailboat in winter storage at North Cape, Tim immediately grabbed a spray can of paint and drew an outline of a body on the concrete at the base of the broken ladder and put crime scene tape around it.
