Sean L. Maguire

August 19, 1990 — May 23, 2022

On Monday, May 23rd, 2022, Sean Maguire (31), beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend, was taken from this world. Originally from Minnesota, Sean was an Eagle Scout, Rescue Scuba Diver, swim school instructor and manager, volunteer Firefighter, and EMT. He moved to Punta Gorda during the pandemic to be closer to his family and to attend Paramedic school. Sean was working as an EMT and aspired to return to Firefighting; it was his dream and he was on his way to achieving it. Sean was returning from class when he was tragically killed in a car accident by a driver driving on the wrong side of the road. He was taken from our lives far too soon.

Sean’s spirit was one of kindness and generosity, which was reflected in everything he did. He led his life by example – giving grace, practicing patience, and making everyone feel included. He was a compassionate soul who never took credit for anything but gave so much of himself to others. Sean was one of those rare empathic individuals who could sense another’s need and would have the strength of character to offer support – whether it was to lend an ear, provide understanding, mentor, or to be their advocate. He was the kind of friend you wanted in your corner. There has been an outpouring of notes, texts, and calls from people who wanted to share the impact that Sean made on their lives. Some examples are comments of who he was as a friend: “Sean was there for me during the darkest days of my life.” Comments of who he was as an instructor: “Sean’s guidance and teaching allowed my daughter to be a leader.” Comments of who he was as a human being: “Sean was one of the kindest and most caring people I have ever known.” This was the kind of man he was.

Sean had an infectious laugh and a smile that would light up his entire face, the joy he brought will be missed more than anything. His silly disposition was complemented by a wisdom beyond his years. We will remember his many lessons as they guide us in our lives forever. Sean, thank you for being an amazing man who, without exception, lifted us up when times were tough. You were always smiling, laughing, and making jokes. Life was a party to enjoy and you carried that happiness within you, spreading it to others. As a son and brother, you were the heart of our family. You kept us grounded and reminded us what was most important in life. You gave freely and forgave willingly. Your loving presence will be forever missed. An irreplaceable piece of us left with you but we vow to live each day in a way that would make you proud. In that way, you will live on in the hearts of those who love you forever.

Sean is survived by his parents, Mike and Kathy Maguire, sister Shannon Maguire and beloved dog Ozzy. He is also survived by his grandmother, Barbara Van Pelt, paternal Uncles Richard Maguire, Dale Maguire (David Carden) and maternal Aunt and Uncle, Elizabeth Adams (Daniel). He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Louis White and paternal grandparents, Douglas and Theresa Maguire. A celebration of Sean’s life will be held Saturday, June 4th at Johnson Taylor Funeral Home in Punta Gorda, Florida from 2 pm – 4 pm.

In lieu of flowers, we are asking what we know Sean would have wanted – please do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for some other person in Sean’s memory.
