Miriam A. Kincaid

Miriam Arlene Stookey Kincaid, 86, of Port Charlotte, Florida passed away on May 28, 2023. She was born to Delmar and Roberta (McRoberts) Stookey June 23, 1936. Arlene graduated from Lebanon High School in Lebanon, Indiana in 1955, and Ball State Teachers College in 1960.

Kincaid, along with therapist, Gretchen Moore, started the Speech Therapy Program for the Lawrence Township Schools in the fall of 1960. In November of 1960, she married Airman First Class James M. Kincaid at the Bolling AFB in Washington, DC. Kincaid continued working as a speech therapist until their first son, Mark, was born in the spring of 1962. After the birth of their second son, Jeffery, in January of 1964, Kincaid returned to work as a speech therapist for the Lebanon Schools until the family’s move to Florida in February of 1968.

In the fall of 1968, Arlene started to work for the school systems of DeSoto County and in 1971, the Charlotte County Public Schools. She retired from the Charlotte County schools in December of 1998. Kincaid then subbed for the system until 2011.

Arlene was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charlotte Harbor, as well as the CC Retired Educators, Peace River Writers, and Friends of the Pt. Charlotte Library where she taught several classes. Arlene volunteered in the schools and tutored several students. Working with kids was her favorite thing to do. She also attended monthly meetings for the N. Pt. Writers.

Kincaid was voted Volunteer of the Year twice while a member of the CC Retired Educators where she held offices and was director of the crafters. This group made and sold many craft items, the sales of these items were used in the scholarship fund for future teachers.

Arlene wrote 13 books which were published, and many were donated to the local library. She believed humor was needed in daily life and tried to show positive humor in the books she published through Amazon.com. She also donated her brain to the research for Sturge Weber Syndrome, a condition which she had from birth.

There will be no service and her ashes will be buried in the military cemetery in Sarasota.
