Evan C. Werner

January 15, 1934 — September 17, 2013

Evan C. "Chuck" Werner, 79, of Punta Gorda FL, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013. He was born in Winchester, Connecticut, on January 15, 1934 to Carl and Eda Werner. A determined self-starter, he knew what he wanted, and never waited. Chuck was a Marine first, but was also a true outdoorsman, serial practical joker, and dedicated husband and father. He lived his passions. Always optimistic, he never met a stranger, and one of the only things he loved more than the prospect of his next adventure was embellishing his previous one. An above-average student, he left high school the day after seeing "Sands of Iwo Jima" and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He saw significant combat in Korea months later as an infantryman and flamethrower operator. He was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart. While on recruiting duty he met and married Jennie Andreoni of Carbondale, Pa. in June 1957. He participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis and served a tour in Vietnam. His final assignment was as the Quantico Marine Base Game Warden, his dream job. Chuck earned a commission and retired as a Major after 21 years of service. He then became a Virginia real estate agent and broker, and launched his own successful real estate business. He sold the business after ten years and moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., where he continued working in real estate and going hunting and fishing. Chuck will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Jennie; sons, Nick (Ginny), Mike (Sue), David (Kim) and Chuck (Erin); 10 grandchildren; one great grandson; sister, Suzanne; sister-in-law, Mary; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Chuck's life will be held at 4pm, Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Church of the Good Shepherd, Punta Gorda. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Church of the Good Shepherd, 401 W. Henry Street, Punta Gorda, FL 33950 or a charity of your choice.
